Description of work

The materials in OSCs vary greatly, and our partners in ESTABLIS will be developing state-of-the-art materials and devices with a need for extreme exactitude in chemical and physical analysis. The task of the Fellow will be to provide vertical and surface studies of OSCs being developed within the consortium. Analytical methods with high resolutions and extremely high sensitivities such as secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), SEM with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), and AFM will be employed by the successful candidate to characterise chemical surfaces and morphologies subject to ageing.

The Fellow will relate ageing to surface and electronic modifications. S/he will also characterise fractures within microtomed sections of OSCs using SEM and AFM.

The successful candidate will spend 26 months at the Host International Laser Centre in Bratislava in two periods separated by 10 months at the Johannes Kepler University in Austria. While the aforementioned research will be performed at the Host, the co-host will provide training in the complementary theories and applications of organic semiconductors and impedance spectroscopy. Interactions between the Host and co-Host institutions will be one of the keys in characterising materials in the ESTABLIS network.

The Fellow will thus receive complete and coherent training in a wide range of theoretical and analytical methods to construct a well-sought after CV for future employment in academia or industry.


  • Carry out surface investigations of materials for OSCs
  • Characterise the evolution of material ageing
  • Develop and use TOF-SIMS, SEM/EDX, AFM/KPFM and other related techniques for OSCs

Correlate chemical degradation with material and functional properties


The successful candidate will receive scientific training in:

  • A wide range of analytical methods
  • OSC materials degradation and stability
  • Laser and photonic technologies
  • Surface composition characterization (TOF SIMS, SEM/EDS) of OSCs
  • Surface morphology characterization by AFM/KPFM and SEM/SE of OSCs

S/he will also receive complementary training in field such as career development, public outreach, communication, entrepreneurial skills, financial and project management, scientific writing, and other career relevant skills. The PhD Fellow is expected to actively participate in workshops, Summer Schools and conference organised by the ESTABLIS network.
Additional modules of scientific relevance will be provided by the Host Doctorial School along with appropriate language training where necessary.


  • A Cotutelle PhD from both of the Slovak University of Technology Bratislava (Slovak Republic) and Johannes Kepler University, Linz (Austria).
  • 3 Year full time position
  • Salary will be according to EU regulations
  • Possible short stays (< 1 month) with the Associate Partners AMCOR, EVONIK, and SIEMENS.


Applicants must have or be expected to receive prior to the 1st September 2012 the equivalent of a degree in chemistry/physics that will allow them to register for a PhD at the Slovak University in Bratislava and in Johannes Kepler University, Linz, Austria.
The candidate should have:

  • A sound background in physical chemistry or material analysis/electronics/physics and strong interest in analytical chemistry
  • Experience in material chemistry and electronics, analytical chemistry and material analysis would be advantageous
  • Good spoken and written English and excellent communication skills are expected

The applicant can be of any nationality but must, as of the 1st September 2012:

  • Not already have a PhD;
  • Have less that 4 years full-time research experience
  • Not have carried out their main activity in Slovakia for more than 12 months in the last 3 years from the starting date of the fellowship
