Description of work

The electronic structure of new organic materials and their interfaces play a major role for the understanding and the improvement of OSCs. Possible interface reactions and electronic interface parameters, which are of vital importance for charge transport across these interfaces, will be mainly extracted from x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS). Another focus is the understanding of the degradation of the materials which affects also interface parameters. The decay kinetics and
product evolution of the polymer degradation will be monitored using complementary spectroscopic techniques including optical spectroscopies. The ageing of OSCs and materials is also an objective of during his/her visit at the Photochemistry team of the Université Blaise Pascal, Clermont-Ferrand (Co-hosting for 8 months). Additional training will centre on modelling of reaction/degradation mechanisms depending on environmental conditions in cooperation with Konarka Technologies GmbH (Nürnberg).

The successful candidate will be fully trained in a variety of spectroscopic techniques not only highly pertinent to OSCs but to a range of other polymer-based systems and will therefore be eminently employable in academia or industry.

Tasks

Characterization of new organic materials using a complementary spectroscopic techniques
Establish correlations between organic materials properties, thin film deposition parameters and interface properties (dipoles, barriers, ionization potential)
Study of the degradation mechanism of materials with focus on blends and corresponding interfaces

Training

The successful candidate will receive scientific training in:
Characterization of materials and interfaces using a broad variety of spectroscopic techniques
Degradation mechanisms of polymers and in particular of blends
Working with a leading company in the field of solar technology.

S/he will also receive complementary training in field such as career development, public outreach, communication, entrepreneurial skills, financial and project management, scientific writing, and other career relevant skills. The PhD Fellow is expected to actively participate in workshops, Summer Schools and conference organised by the ESTABLIS network.
Additional modules of scientific relevance will be provided by the Host Doctorial School along with appropriate language training where necessary.

Requirements

Applicants must have, or be expected to receive, prior to the 1st September 2012 the equivalent of a degree in chemistry that will allow them to register for a PhD at Universität Tübingen and the Université Blaise Pascal, Clermont-Ferrand (France)
The candidate should:

  • Have a sound background in the field of physical chemistry
  • Be familiar with surface and interface physics and UHV techniques and/or optical spectroscopies (this would be very favourable but are not a precondition);
  • Good spoken and written English and excellent communication skills are expected

The applicant can be of any nationality but must, as of the 1st September 2012:

  • Not already have a PhD
  • Have less that 4 years full-time research experience
  • Not have carried out their main activity in Germany for more than 12 months in the last 3 years from the starting date of the fellowship
