Description of work

OSCs exhibit low resistances to sunlight, temperature, oxygen and water. Therefore, device encapsulation is pivotal to develop low cost, highly stable, large-scale OSCs. Various routes exist to achieve the barrier levels for OSCs. One is the improvement of the barrier properties of polymers by nanofillers. The objective of the fellowship will be to deliver characterizations of new transparent encapsulations based on nanocomposites and to target physical stability and photostability of these packaging materials.
In ESTABLIS, the successful PhD Fellow will conduct studies on the photostability of new packaging materials of OSCs. This work will include processing and characterization of the initial properties of barrier materials using various analytical techniques, such as IR and UV-Visible spectroscopies, XRD, TEM, DSC and AFM. The same methods will be used to follow and quantify the photoageing of the encapsulation materials.
The successful candidate will spend 27 months at the Host institution in Clermont-Ferrand and 9 months co-hosting at the International Laser Centre in Bratislava, where the Fellow will work on complementary studies using TOF-SIMS and surface characterisation methods. Interactions between the two institutions will be one of the keys for the development of stable materials.


  • Propose barrier materials for the encapsulation of OSCs
  • Characterise the optical and barrier properties of the encapsulation layer
  • Characterise the chemical structure evolution of the encapsulation layers
  • Correlate the chemical modifications with the degradation of the functional properties
  • Stipulate guidelines for the design and characterisation of stable encapsulation materials


The successful candidate will receive scientific training in:

  • photochemistry
  • polymer degradation and stability
  • nanocomposite characterization
  • laser and photonic technologies
  • microelectronics, organic electronics including OSCs
  • surface characterization methods (TOF SIMS, SEM/EDX, AFM/KPFM)

S/he will also receive complementary training in field such as career development, public outreach, communication, entrepreneurial skills, financial and project management, scientific writing, and other career relevant skills. The PhD Fellow is expected to actively participate in workshops, Summer Schools and conference organised by the ESTABLIS network. Additional modules of scientific relevance will be provided by the Host Doctorial School along with appropriate language training where necessary.


A Cotutelle PhD from both of the Blaise Pascal University of Clermont-Ferrand (France) and Slovak University of Technology Bratislava (Slovak Republic).
3 year full time position

Possible short stays (< 1 month) with the Associate Partners AMCOR, EVONIK, and SIEMENS


Applicants must have, or be expected to receive, prior to the 1st September 2012 the equivalent of a degree in chemistry that will allow them to register for a PhD at Université Blaise Pascal and and at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava.
The candidate should have:

  • A sound background in physical chemistry
  • A strong interest in analytical chemistry or organic electronics and photonics
  • Experience in material chemistry and hybrid materials would be advantageous
  • Good spoken and written English and excellent communication skills are expected

The applicant can be of any nationality but must, as of the 1st September 2012:

  • Not already have a PhD
  • Have less that 4 years full-time research experience
  • Not have carried out their main activity in France for more than 12 months in the last 3 years from the starting date of the fellowship
