About this job

PhD location

Johannes Kepler University, Linz - Austria

Starting date

1st September 2012

Description of work

New polymers based on fullerenes are expected to play a role in the development of highly stable, large-scale OSCs. In ESTABLIS, the PhD Fellow will have the aim of characterising and testing pristine and aged OSCs and related materials.
The successful candidate will carry out extensive characterisation measurements of OSCs using various impedance analysers and equipment for precise CV-measurements. Measurements will be performed under a range of environmental conditions and the Fellow will learn how to measure and interpret thermo- and opto-electronic properties of OSCs. Comprehensive training on the practical use of the instrumentation together with introduction to theoretical concepts and models will be provided. Together with the electrical characterisation of OSCs theoretical models shall also be tested. Both experimental and theoretical results shall be used further to develop an ageing protocol of OSCs.
A two month secondment at the Aston University and a five month secondment at MERCK Chemicals Ltd will provide additional training in synthesis and the processing of materials and OSC fabrication.

Tasks

  • Electrical characterisation of OSCs and related materials
  • Experimental investigation of theoretical models
  • Development and investigation of accelerated ageing protocols

Training

The successful candidate will receive scientific training in:

  • Theory, experiment and application of impedance spectroscopy
  • Fabrication of OSCs and synthesis and processing of related materials
  • Experimental aspects and application of organic semiconductor theory

S/he will also receive complementary training in field such as career development, public outreach, communication, entrepreneurial skills, financial and project management, scientific writing, and other career relevant skills. The PhD Fellow is expected to actively participate in workshops, Summer Schools and conference organised by the ESTABLIS network. Additional modules of scientific relevance will be provided by the Host Doctorial School along with appropriate language training where necessary.

Benefits

  • 3 Year full time position
  • Salary will be according to EU regulations
  • Possible short stays (< 1 month) with the Associate Partners AMCOR, EVONIK, and SIEMENS

Requirements

Applicants must have or be expected to receive prior to the 1st of September 2012 the equivalent of a degree in physics or electrical engineering that will allow them to register for a PhD at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz.

The candidate should have:

  • Both practical and theoretical knowledge of electrical measurement techniques
  • Good theoretical understanding of semiconductor physics
  • Good spoken and written English and excellent communication skills are expected

The applicant can be of any nationality but must, as of the 1st September 2012:

  • Not already have a PhD
  • Have less that 4 years full-time research experience
  • Not have carried out their main activity in Austria for more than 12 months in the last 3 years from the starting date of the fellowship

Main evaluation criteria

  • Skills of the Fellow
  • Motivation for the project ESTABLIS and the science and training proposed
  • Willingness to travel, exchange across preconceived scientific barriers and participate in
  • complementary training activities
  • Prior experience and publications if any
