Description of work

The aim of the PhD Fellow will be to characterise the photo-electrical properties of the new polymers and OSCs. The obtained results will be compared and analyzed with the spectroscopical data provided by the project partners. This will allow an understanding of photo-electrical processes in OSCs and will lead to development and design of more efficient solar cells.

The successful candidate will spend most of his time (26 months) in the host institution in Vilnius University studying new materials and OSCs with Photo-CELIV, time of flight and double injection techniques, and will have regular exchanges with the Madrid Institute for Advanced Studies to compare results on charge carrier transport in OSCs. Once fully understanding the opto-electronic needs of the materials, the Fellow will learn basic synthetic chemistry at co-host institution (Université de Pau, 9 months) to prepare facilely attainable polyfullerenes. These materials are expected to be directly relevant to the prior studies and will furthermore be used in the same studies on the Fellow's return to Vilnius. S/he will gain concurrent, programmed training at preparing and characterising polymer layers and OSC structures in an industrial environment with Konarka Technologies GmbH (1 month). It is expected that the Fellow will have opened doors to a wide range of electronic industrial and academic positions due to their ability to cross chemical and physical terminology and directly relate structural and behavioural properties.


Investigate charge carriers transport and recombination by the means of photo-CELIV and other related techniques
Compare the obtained results with the results gained from spectroscopy
Synthesise and characterise the structure of the polymers
Investigate OSC performance and degradation


The successful candidate will receive scientific training in:
Practical skills in charge carriers extraction by linearly increasing volatge (CELIV), time of flight (TOF), double injection currents (DoI) experimental techniques
Degradation tests of the solar cells
Polymer synthesis and characterization

S/he will also receive complementary training in field such as career development, public outreach, communication, entrepreneurial skills, financial and project management, scientific writing, and other career relevant skills. The PhD Fellow is expected to actively participate in workshops, Summer Schools and conference organised by the ESTABLIS network. Additional modules of scientific relevance will be provided by the Host Doctorial School along with appropriate language training where necessary.


  • A Cotutelle PhD from both of the Vilnius University and Université de Pau
  • 3 Year full time position
  • Salary will be according to EU regulations
  • Possible short stays (< 1 month) with the Associate Partners AMCOR, EVONIK, and SIEMENS


Applicants must have or be expected to receive prior to the 1st September 2012 the equivalent of a degree in physics or electrical engineering that will allow them to register for a PhD at the University of Vilnius and the Université de Pau
The candidate should have:

  • A background in the experimental physics in the field of the organic materials (or amorphous inorganic materials) and structures.
  • Experience in synthetic chemistry would be advantageous
  • Good spoken and written English and excellent communication skills are expected

The applicant can be of any nationality but must, as of the 1st September 2012:

  • Not already have a PhD
  • Have less that 4 years full-time research experience
  • Not have carried out their main activity in Lithuania for more than 12 months in the last 3 years from the starting date of the fellowship
