About this job

New polymers based on fullerenes are expected to play a role in the development of highly stable, large-scale OSCs. The PhD Fellow will have the aim of developing new fullerene-based materials for OSCs. This work will be carried out using predictive modelling techniques, polymer and organic chemistry, and photo-emission spectroscopy to target optimised structures.

The successful candidate will spend equal time (50/50) predicatively modelling and synthesizing materials during her/his 26 months at the Host institution in Pau. Co-hosting (9 months) at the Universität Tübingen will make it possible for the Fellow to learn and use spectroscopic techniques such as photo-emission (XPS/UPS) to characterize their own materials and those of the consortium. Comparing these results with those expected from modelling of electronic ground and excited states will enable the Fellow to design new polymers apt for industrial use. A one month secondment at Aston University to develop organic synthetic techniques, followed by regular exchanges with this group throughout the Fellowship will enhance the Fellow's standing in organic chemistry.

The Fellow will thus receive coherent training in synthesis, predictive modelling, and opto-electronic characterisation to construct a well-sought after CV for future employment in polymer synthesis and predictive design in academia or industry.


  • Exploit modelling to design new polymers based on fullerene for OSCs
  • Synthesise and characterise the structure of the polymers
  • Characterise their opto-electronic behaviour using photo-emission spectroscopy (UPS/XPS)
  • Combine results from modelling and characterisations to design new polymers


The successful candidate will receive scientific training in:

  • Modelling
  • Small molecule and polymer synthesis and characterisation
  • UPS/XPS characterisations

S/he will also receive complementary training in field such as career development, public outreach, communication, entrepreneurial skills, financial and project management, scientific writing, and other career relevant skills. The PhD fellow is expected to actively participate in workshops, Summer Schools and conference organised by the ESTABLIS network. Additional modules of scientific relevance will be provided by the Host Doctorial School along with appropriate language training where necessary.


  • A Cotutelle PhD from both of the Université de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour and Universität Tübingen.
  • 3 Year full time position
  • Salary will be according to EU regulations (around 39 k € per year before tax)
  • Possible short stays (<1 month) with the Associate Partners AMCOR, EVONIK, and SIEMENS.


Applicants must have or be expected to receive prior to the 1st September 2012 the equivalent of a degree in chemistry that will allow them to register for a PhD at the Université de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour and at the Universität Tübingen.

The candidate should have:

  • A sound background in computational chemistry
  • A strong interest in physical and or theoretical chemistry
  • Experience in synthetic chemistry would be advantageous
  • Good spoken and written English and excellent communication skills

The applicant can be of any nationality but must, as of the 1st September 2012:

  • Not already have a PhD
  • Have less that 4 years full-time research experience
  • Not have carried out their main activity in France for more than 12 months in the last 3 years from the starting date of the fellowship
