Description of work

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) based polyelectrolyte complexes, often with polystyrene sulfonic acid (PPS), are widely used in OSCs as a buffer layers between the anode, typically ITO, and the photoactive layer. The advantage of incorporating PEDOT-PSS buffer layers in OSCs is based on several properties. First, PEDOT-PSS planarizes the underlying surface by smoothening surface imperfections. Second, PEDOT-PSS buffer layers make processing more reproducible. Third, the voltage drop across the buffer layer can be neglected. Fourth, PEDOT-PSS buffer layers do improve device performances.
Despite its advantages, the introduction of PEDOT-PSS as a buffer layer in OSCs also faces obstacles. Reports have cited the acidity of the aqueous PEDOT-PSS dispersion and the inherent moisture sensitivity of PEDOT-PSS, which results in a water absorption. The acidity of PEDOT-PSS being in the pH range of 1 to 2 is thought to dissolve cations such as indium ions from the ITO layer. Nevertheless, PEDOT-PSS acidity is considered advantageous in enabling good interfacial contact by etching off all contaminations from the TCO surface during deposition. Furthermore the adhesive properties of PEDOT-PSS towards the bulk-heterojunction may be increased.

Resaerch Objectives & Tasks

  • Different counter-ions will be used in the PEDOT dispersions
  • The pH value of the dispersions will be varied
  • PEDOT based films for OSC will be characterized
  • OSC devices will be built and characterized
  • The stability of the devices over time under various testing conditions will be monitored
  • The adhesion on various substrates will be tested
  • The photochemical stability of Clevios materials will be evaluated with CNRS-LPMM

  • Training in career development, public outreach, communication, entrepreneurial skills, IP, and scientific writing
  • Placements in the Laboratories of Project Partners
  • The PhD Fellow is expected to actively participate in workshops, Summer Schools and conferences organized by the ITN Marie Curie Network.

S/he will also receive complementary training in field such as career development, public outreach, communication, entrepreneurial skills, financial and project management, scientific writing, and other career relevant skills. The Postdoc Fellow is expected to actively participate in workshops, Summer Schools and conference organised by the ESTABLIS network. S/he will actively participate in the Fellows' and the Publicity & Outreach Committees, potentially as a Chairperson.

Requirements

  • The fellow must have a Ph.D. in either, physical chemistry, physics, electronics, or materials science. S/he should have:
  • A 1st degree in Chemistry, Physics or Material Science
  • A PhD with experience in Organic Electronics
  • The ability to work in a team
  • Be a fluent English Speaker
  • German Language skills are beneficial

According to EU requirements, the applicant can be of any nationality but must, as of the 1st September 2012 have:
Less than five years of full time research experience.
Must not have spent more than 12 of the last 36 months in Germany
